The new-season jeans guide

Cut, wash, construction: a guide to the different styles of jeans to wear now and for seasons to come

No longer just an off-duty staple or fail-safe option for weekend dressing, denim is now considered part of the everyday uniform. Elevated beyond its casual connotations, the reliable and enduring fabric has reached new heights in the ready-to-wear realm, often serving as a hero look as well as an outfit foundation.

With denim dominating the modern wardrobe, there is more opportunity than ever to experiment with different styles of jeans – from work-appropriate washes and cuts to slouchy pairs that lean more casual.

The COS denim collection spans both ends of the spectrum, from timeless straight-leg jeans to directional cropped and wide-leg fits. The everyday fabric is reinterpreted in the key silhouettes of the moment: the Pre-Fall 24 edit introduces a trio of new styles that focus on a wider silhouette, alongside signature core shapes.

No matter which style you choose, COS jeans are designed to transcend seasons. Expertly engineered from recycled and organic cotton, our classic blue and black jeans for women are rooted in effortless style, while reimagined fabrics and colour-saturated washes offer a fresh take on established codes. Read on to discover the various types of jeans in the new collection and how to style them.

THE STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS

Shaped with a straight, loose fit and a low rise, the Facade Turn-Up jeans embody effortless nonchalance – the wide cuffs enhance the laid-back feel. They're crafted from organic- and recycled cotton-blend denim and offered in a range of washes: a classic black shade that will style effortlessly with the pieces in your wardrobe; a faded version for a lived-in feel; a dusty grey for a fresh take on neutrals.

When it comes to styling loose, straight jeans, it’s all about balance: a fitted top will counteract the relaxed silhouette, elevating the overall look. A short-sleeved crew-neck jumper from the Pre-Fall 2024 collection provides the perfect transitional pairing, while a slinky knitted polo top will take the look into evening.

THE RELAXED JEANS

An evolution of classic COS denim, the Facade jeans are defined by their slightly slouchier fit and artfully twisted seams – a subtle attention to detail that sets them apart from everyday straight-leg styles. Otherwise, the construction remains true to traditional designs: five pockets, logo-detailed hardware and just the right amount of fading through the front.

The versatile, streamlined shape of the Facade jeans allows for endless styling possibilities. A tucked-in white shirt in a tonal-blue hue looks polished enough for work appointments, particularly when paired with a heeled slingback or sandal. For laid-back weekends, blue jeans and a white T-shirt will forever be a fail-safe look – the COS Clean Cut version pairs particularly well with relaxed denim thanks to its boxy fit.

THE WIDE-LEG JEANS

Taking their name from the amped-up silhouette, the Volume jeans lean into the season’s relaxed mood with an exaggerated wide cut through the legs. Designed to sit low on the waist, this style features subtle contrast topstitching, logo-engraved metal rivets and voluminous legs that are intentionally cut to pool over at the hem. The 10oz organic-cotton denim is spray-dyed to achieve a deep, colour-rich wash – the alternative mid-blue or light-blue iterations offer a more subtle, everyday take.

There are numerous ways to style wide-leg jeans, but the art is in getting the proportions right. The easiest way to complement baggy jeans is with a slim-profile shoe: a pointed kitten heel or angular boot provide the necessary contrast, as seen in the Pre-Fall 2024 collection.

DENIM CARE

The COS denim collection is crafted with longevity in mind, and there are many ways to ensure your jeans last as long as they were designed to. Denim is a fabric defined by its twill structure, which is exceptionally durable. You don’t need to wash denim and jeans all the time: a few times per season should be more than enough.

Between washes, you can spot clean surface dirt with a damp cloth. To wash denim, a gentle machine wash at 30°C or lower is ideal. There are also specialist detergents available. Wash denim inside out to stop the colour fading, and hang it out to dry, as heat from a tumble dryer could cause shrinkage. The weight of the denim will help to pull out any creases. Avoid using an iron as heat can weaken the fibres.
